As I bring up every year, this is the prime car event of the season for
folks who love cars primarily from WW2 through the musclecar days. In fact,
it seems like every musclecar ever built is here, including twice as many
absolutely original, number-correct Hemis, LS6s & LS7s, etc than the
factories ever produced! ;-)
I can't describe well enough just how absolutely cool this event is! It
stretches for 16 miles along Woodard from the Detroit city limits up through
the city of Pontiac. Estimates were for 1.5-1.7 million people last year,
and 30,000+ cars. I even suspect the estimate was LOW for the number of
cars!!
The official day is Saturday 8/16, but people have already started hanging
out on Woodward in the evenings (much to the displeasure of the local
residents!) Wee used to go out there on Friday, then Thursday, and now we'll
be out on Tuesday night because it gets so crowded later in the week
(seriously built Z28 with a heavy clutch does not like stop-n-go traffic!)
We will be out there all day on Saturday, culminating with watching cars do
burnouts up in Pontiac at night (the WDC officials are "looser" up
there.....can't do that stuff farther down the route!!) Also Chevy and Ford
have their company displays in the Birmingham area, which is also pretty
nice.
Some of the V8 SHO folks from Canada came last year for the first time and
had a lot of fun. If anyone is in within a reasonable drive from Detroit,
you really owe it to yourselves to attend. You will not regret it!!
