Actually, I was thinking more about running hot. Running cool/rich would tend to reduce or eliminate detonation. As far as deposits go, I would think that deposits inside the chamber would be the only concern (as far as knocking goes.) I don't see how deposits on the back of the valves (such as Bruce's) would be a problem.
Also, I don't know of anything that would cause the timing to be too far advanced other than maybe an LPM. I believe that if your knock sensor has failed, that that would throw a code during KOER. :-/

Actually I did - does this mean the switch is failing? What exactly does
this switch do?

Come to think of it, it has been running pretty cool lately, so deposits may
be the problem. Maybe I should replace the thermostat...
