[Shotimes] Gen3 window motor

My brother has a 96.  His LEFT REAR window isn't operating and he thinks he
needs a new motor.

--- What tests should he run to confirm that it's the motor?  He should
confirm it does not work from the front or rear door switch, yes?  What
else?

--- If it is the motor, what years and motors are interchangeable?  I'm
looking at an eBay auction that gives a year range of 98-03.  Did motors
change 97-98?  And is it really true that front and rear motors are
interchangeable on the same side of the car?
