I don't think I've ever had to do this, but there might be a couple of ways.

1)  Remove the oil fill cap and see if you can see the cam through that 
opening.
2)  Take a couple of bolts out of the upper cam cover and pry it open enough 
to see the timing belt.

Now either turn the engine by hand or have someone turn it with the starter 
while you look at the cam to see if it turns.
