[Shotimes] 1993 MTX stalling problem

I know some with a spare stock MAF, as well as an 80mm with a matching LPM!!
He must have a CE light. Once I inadvertently left the MAF unplugged on the
'95, and I drove around for the evening. Ran fine (well, it ran the same as
that car ran with it plugged in!), but the CE light was on the whole time.
Those with an intimate knowledge of the Probst book can fill in more
details, but the MAF and O2 sensors both set mixture. IIRC, though, upon
cold-start & WOT, the engine is in closed-loop and only reads the MAF and
not the O2s, so who knows what the car is running at.
Could explain why the car has no bottom-end power in normal driving, as well
as the blacker-than-a-normal-SHO tailpipe tips I noticed on the car last
weekend.
Running too rich could also cook the cats and cause more engine problems
than he wants to deal with.
If the car was running sorta fine (or consistent, anyway) until yesterday,
Al's suggestion about the fuel pump also sounds like a good thing to check.

Nope, went and looked at the car tonight. MAF is nowhere to be found. When
I got there, the car was (of course) on its best behavior, exhibiting none
of the problems that Nick had described earlier. Regardless, we did most of
the usual stuff, cleaned and tightened battery terminals, cleaned TB, and
cleaned the IAB. Car ran fine.
Now, this brings up a few more questions. Besides the strange behavior the
car exhibited today, how is it running without a MAF? Nick bought this car
three weeks ago or so and its been fine up until now (although the AF gauge
is pegged rich). The intake that came on the car is a Ractive filter with
an AEM intake placed directly onto the TB with a rubber coupling. Not only
is the MAF nonexistant, the connector for it is laying right in the engine
bay. No chip that I can tell on the computer (although I'm a v8 owner, what
do I know). We put the intake from Tara's 94 ATX onto Nick's car and it ran
no differently. In fact, we disconnected her MAF with the car running and
it didn't even stumble. I'm puzzled.
Anyway, he bought this car from an SVT/SHO Society member (Donny somebody?)
and there is plenty of custom work done to it. Stage 1 Cams, Y-pipe, soon
to be remove air intake, Roush ported and polished heads, extrude honed
intake, custome coilovers, etc, etc, etc. If anybody knows of this car, and
could help fill us in on any details, that would be wonderful as well.
Again, thanks for reading and helping.

MAF is probably in the fenderwell. Check that connection also.

List,
I'm posting for a friend that isn't on the mailing lists (yet, I have a
feeling that he will be when this is all said and done). He has a 1993 MTX
that is having some issues this afternoon.
Driving down the road and coming to a stop, the car began to stall out on
him. he got it off the road and called me. I had him check fuel and such.
Had pressure at the schraeder valve. Disconected the battery to reset the
computer and started the car. It would idle fine, but as soon as he gave it
any gas, the car will stall out. I had him reset the computer again and let
the car relaearn idle. Again, idled fine, but with gas it wanted to stall.
Was also hard to get to start on some startups.
My next thought was to have him check the connections on the MAF and DIS.
DIS was ok, but from what he saw, there is no MAF on the car! Sounds
strange to me, but I'm going down there to look at it in a few minutes. Car
has run fine for the past month since he bought it, so I can't belive that
there is no MAF, but we'll see.
As far as a car that will idle properly but die at anything besides idle,
does this ring a bell with anyone?
Your help is appreciated.
