I don't know the exact sequence of events here, or even all of the terms (any more),
but I do know a MAF system will run fine with the MAF sensor disconnected. That was
the way to diagnose a bad MAF connector, a problem which was occasionally
encountered due to bad wiring harness plugs in 8 or 10 (or so) year old MAF cars.
When the Lowrider had its crank cancer, but was undiagnosed, I tried running it
without the MAF connected to see if it would run better, which it naturally did not.
The CE light was on, but the engine ran just the same without the connector as it
did with it. I think the PCM converts to the older way (Ford EFI from the mid
80s....86-87 Mustangs had it....was it called a MAP system?) that electronic EFI
systems measured airflow (and did it a lot less accurately), using the BAP sensor as
a gauge.
