I currently have a 90 LX hatchback with the V8 and a 5-speed. The things you need to look for is the condition of the drive train, especially the 5-speed tranny. A lot of people abuse them, damaging the 3rd gear synchronizers, and the cluster gears, which can be very costly to repair. You can just about buy a world class T-5 or Tremec trans for the cost of a beefed up T-5 rebuild, if the engine has been modified a lot. My car has an Explorer V-8 intake, Ford Racing E303 cam, off road exhaust with Flowmasters, and 3.73 gears, with a stock T-5. It is holding up really well, but I don't beat on it. The engines are pretty dependable from what I have experienced. My cousin had a 93 GT with the 5-speed and the same setup as I have in mine, he took it to the drag strip and hammered it to see what the best times it would run, he launched it at 5000- 6000 rpm's on slicks, and about 2 weeks later, the crank broke, ruining his engine. Another thing to look for is previous wreck damage,
especially frontal collisions if the inner fender structures have been replaced. If you find one in good shape, drive it if you can, and use your best judgement. There are lots of these cars out there, so parts are far from being hard to find. The most expensive and harder to find pieces are the black interior pieces. Look on ebay under mustang black and look at what seats, door panels, and other interior pieces cost. The red and grey/ titanium colors are not as hard to find or are as expensive to buy.

Was the car you raced an automatic, or a stick?
