Subject: [Shotimes] (OT) For anyone considering a home air compressor
This is just an FYI for anybody who is looking for a home compressor to run
air tools.
Happened to be looking at the Sears sales flyer that came with the weekend
paper (trying to find a deal on a rolling tool cabinet). Anyway, they
happened to have a couple of air compressors on sale.
I already have one, but one looked similar to my C-H. It is a 3 HP with a
15-gallon tank, 150 psi max.
A problem showed up in the fine print. It only has 2.6 SCFM at 90 psi (I
believe the SCFM refers to Steady Cubic Feet per Minute....if not, that's
what it means, anyway!).
I would NOT consider a compressor with less than 5 SCFM at 90 psi. Just
about all air tools you look at (like impacts) will tell you their SCFM
requirement at 90 psi. Many of the regular 3/8" impacts (like
Ingersoll-Rand) have a 2.5 SCFM requirement. Now, the 2.6 is right at the
limit.
The spiffy I-R 1/2" Street Legal ThunderGun that I'm considering (version of
the NASCAR gun) requires over 5+ SCFM to run. Most of the 1/2" impacts need
4.0 or better.
Just something to consider. I got my 5 HP 13 gallon C-H a couple of years
ago for $200 at Wal-Mart, and it has 5.5 SCFM at 90 psi, so it isn't like
you have to pay big $$$ to get the higher SCFM capacity. The Max PSI isn't
worth much, get a bigger tank and look at the 90 psi SCFM rating.
In case it wasn't clear, I would NOT recommend the one that Sears has on
sale this weekend!!
