Atari-shmari!!! That thing was a piece of junk and was only a few steps
removed from pong. The graphics sucked and so did the sound. All of my
friends had 2600's. I still have my Mattel Electronics Intellivision (not
Magnavox, Ron) with add-on Intellivoice synthesizer unit and a whole
s%$#load of games. The sound and graphics were head and shoulders above the
crappy Atari. We would spend an hour or two playing a new Atari game before
getting bored, but we would play a new Intellivision game for days.
I still play it every Christmas when I go home to my parents house and all
of my little nieces and nephews throw their Gameboy Advance's on the floor
and fight to play my Intellivision. ALL of the Intellivision games were
complicated and technical which was what appealed to me and I think my
nieces and nephews, too. Atari had a joystick and 1 fire button. Gameboy
has 4-way 'joystick' and 2 buttons. Intellivision has a circular control
disc, 12 keypad buttons (customizable for each game with plastic overlays)
and 4 side buttons.
All of my friends had Atari 2600s probably because they didn't cost much. I
was the only one that had Intellivision and my parents paid $200 for it over
20 years ago!!! My friend Mark was the only one to have Colecovision. It
had the best sound and graphics by far, but it was $$$$.
