OK. It seems that it was the #3 spark plug. The rubber tip was missing for a
while and I had gotten a new one from Joseph Van Oss. I finally put it on
this weekend and the drivability problems seem to have gone way!
Thanks everyone.

I agree that a leaky plug well seal or water in the plug wells is the most
likely candidate. However, I also had a stumble in my '93 ATX that was due
to a dirty MAF element. Along with the stumble I was getting horrible fuel
economy and very black exhaust tips (obviously running very rich). I
removed the electronics from the Mass Air Flow sensor and carefully cleaned
them with electrical contact cleaner, a cotton swap, and a very steady,
careful hand in the basement when the cats were outside and no one was home
(didn't want to be startled). The heated and ambient MAF sensor elements
were graphite color when I started and nickel colored when I had them clean.
After putting the cleaned MAF sensor back in my stumble was gone, the
throttle response was excellent, and the fuel economy was back where I
thought it should be. The suspect for the dirty MAF elements was a recently
cleaned and over-oiled K&N conical air filter.

Anybody have any clues as to why my car might be sputtering? It idles
fine.
At
part throttle acceleration it sputters. At cruise it's fine. If I floor
it,
it
sputters for a bit and then smothes out.
New plugs less than 1K miles ago. New TPS. This all has happened since I
cleaned my intake with Berryman's and a car wash. I don't believe it is
still
wet since I washed/cleaned several weeks ago.
