I had the cam lobe as close to the top (180 degrees from the shim face) that I could get them when I measured the gap. I was not sure how the numbers went on the shim sizes, but the higher the number, the thicker the shim, right? Thanks for the info, now to try to finish the gap checks and get the thing going.I have a Ford shop manual, the specs say, on the intake, cold, it is 0.15-0.25 mm( 0.006-0.010 inch). The exhaust, cold, is 0.25-0.35 mm(0.010-0.014).This book was printed in July,1992, so I was not sure if it was current, or if there was a little different info out there. The shop manual is not very detailed on this procedure, so thanks again for the help.

Your gap specs are only correct if u have the cam lobe totally perpindicular to the bucket. This will give u your most accurate reading.
Intake specs are from 6-10 the norm being 8 and the exhaust specs are 10 to 15.
If u have a 15 gap and u want to bring it more within range and your current shim under that lobe reads "2525", you would want to increase the shim width to 2550 to close the gap. When u replace the with the new shim you should get a closer reading to "12".
I have done valve adjustments on about 50 cars give or take .... If i am with in .002 of the norm clearance I will leave that shim alone. But u do want to check every shim for wear. Thats the whole point of a valve adjustment. Most SHO motors even with 100 k on it or more will still be in specs, its the wear of the shim that will cause u to start wearing your cam lobe.
Also ... make sure u put oil on each new shim so they are lubricated.

>I tried to do a valve adjustment last night on my 93 MTX with 130,9?? miles on it. I checked the gap on the intake and exhaust on the right (closest to front of car) head. I was not sure if I done it right, so correct me, or send me to the right place if this has been discused before. The gap on the exhaust, from L to R, was .013, .014, .014, .014, .012, .013. The shim sizes were L to R, was 2550, 2550, 2525, 2550, 2500, 2500. The intake gap was L to R, .009, .010, .010, .010, .010, .010.I did not check the shims for the intake side, the bugs under my fluorescent light were TERRIBLE.I was wondering what I should do to make up for this to get it into specs. The feeler gauge would slide under on one size, the other size up would not slide under, so I went with the one that would not slide under for the spec for that gap size. Any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated, as I am fairly new to the list.
