Probably because as the car goes towards the tree, and the 
driver is in a horrified state, the driver is staring at the 
thing he thinks he is about to hit, and as we learn in 
driving schools, you will subconsciously drive towards 
things you look at.  Thus the caution to try to look where 
you WANT to go, not where you are afraid you will go!  :)
