I tried everything and ended up cracking the lens and case.

I think that the lens is glued on;  A heat gun should be able to get it 
off pretty easily.

If the lens is ruined in the process, I always thought that a clear 
tailight with clear LED's that light up red would look really good and 
would be easy to do.
