    Let us know what the problem was when you figure it out, I've never
heard of a 5th gear letting go and sheering teeth.  Sounds like maybe the
shift fork, but I suppose anything could be the problem.
    Anything can happen, J. White had a rivet fall off the ring gear and
lodge in the internal shifter gate, keeping him locked out of a gear (or
gears, can't remember)  That's gotta be one in a million.

Drain the fluid and see if you get any evidence of any debris, might point
you to the source.
