Yes, originally, in 1993, the 4.0L V8 debuted in the 740iL and the 840Ci,
and starting in 1994, the 540i.  1995 was the final year for the 4.0L V8, in
all BMW models.  1996 seen the debut of the 4.4L V8 in the 740iL and 840Ci,
no 5-Series BMW's were imported into the US for the model year 1996.  The
5-Series debuted with the 4.4L V8 in 1996 (as a '97 model), as the 540i :-)
