[Shotimes] RE: supercharging

Ahhh..What a great time to open an ING account and get $25 by opening it
via my link!

Haha

I agree; you've said it before Ron and it really is true. Anyone owning
a SHO right now is not doing it because it is the most practical car
around. I did buy my first one because I thought that it would be
practical, but after owning one, I should have known better when I got a
second one. It's also about the people on these lists and in the SHO
community; not many other cars come standard with such a large group of
people to fall back on for help or just to chat about OT stuff. I don't
think that I am introverted and need help getting friends, but my car
has helped me make a lot of the current friends that I have today.
Before I go way off on a tangent, I will bring this full circle. I
really think it helps to sit down and look at your budget and decided if
the SHO is the car you want to keep. If so, what are your goals for the
car and how much will it cost you down the road? After all that, do you
still want to keep it? I play this little game every day. :)

I have my goal and I am getting somewhat close to it.

I decided to finally compile a list of work that I have performed on my
SHO. It isn't organized or even checked for spelling errors yet, just a
quick list that I threw together. I plan on creating a nice HTML
document showing prices, the source of the parts and the reason why I
did what I did. Here it is in raw format though.

As you can see, any sane person would have sold this car a long time
ago. Some of the work that I have done was to better the car, but a lot
of it was also maintenance and replacement of faulty parts. It'll make
more sense when I clean it up a bit.

Performance mods are just a way to find the next-weakest link in the
car. A lot of it is defining what your end goal is.

Stash at least half of your signing bonus into a long-term investment,
and forget about it. Then play with the rest.

Personally, even if I somehow got the desire to supercharge a SHO, it
would be as my 3rd or 4th car, not anything that I had to rely on for a
daily driver or a dependable backup.

Wow, 15-20K is a bit excessive for the end goal!! I'm definitely under
the impression that I should stick to some tamer mods. I figured there
was more to adding a supercharger than I would like, but I really had no
idea of the extent of the things that should be considered. I'm sure
somewhere down the line I'll get the chance to transform my car into a
beast, but I should probably wait until I have the funds to do so.
Signing bonuses do evil things to one's mind......

With 159K, you should also plan on a total engine rebuild before even
thinking about a blower.

Unless you are able to do 90%+ of this work yourself, plan on $15-20K.
If you can do virtually all of the work, plan on at least $10K.

Even adding a Quaife really entails rebuilding the trans. This is
$2,500-$3,000 right there, not counting the tranny R&R if you don't do
it yourself.

I would recommend doing a good suspension and brakes (including springs,
struts, sway bars, all new bushings), a good exhaust, underdrive
pulleys, the Quaife with a tranny rebuild, and forget the MAF or a chip.
Also get some wider wheels and good tires. All of this stuff will run
$6K or better as it is. This will improve the handling and performance,
proving a good bang for the buck.

All of the above should be done prior to considering a blower
installation, anyway.

The last is a MAF, and is doesn't add much. I would go with a Pro-M and
forget a chip.

After doing all of the above, then consider the additional $10K+ for an
engine rebuild and a blower setup.

Upon consideration of all the advice given, I've determined that I may
be acting a bit naovely. I'm thinking that I should add a Quaife, a
better exhaust system, a larger MAF, and a higher performance clutch.
Then, after all of that has been completed, I will begin planning out
the installation of a supercharger, assuming I still have some money and
the desire to mess with my car anymore. Thanks for knocking some sense
into me!

With what I know about Supercharged SHO's I dont recommend them unless
your A) totally proficent on working on your car B) the installer is in
your home town.

A super charged show is a hoot to drive. My car was probably on the
light end of HP as S/C SHO's go. I estimate I was about 360 HP +/-.

When you mod a car to the point of S/C you will potentially face
problems from a variety of areas. Blown clutchs, possibly blown motors
..... bad running motor , turned half shafts ..etc.etc.

This is a very expensive propostion. I most certainly would not have the
car as your daily driver.

Bottom line ; yes they are a blast to have ... but unless your very
proficent and plan to use this as your second car I would advise against
it.
