[Shotimes] Battery Light question

Just want to make sure that I am barking up the right tree here.
Last night the battery light came on in the SHO (89). Got the car home and
all was fine...aside from I noticed that the idle was up around 12-1500 rpm.
This morning the car started fine...and there was not battery light. That is
till I got about 2 or so miles down the road...poof...it comes on.
Please correct me if I am wrong, but is this a sign that the alternator is
about to go out on me?
And if that is the case based on this info below...should I just put the 90
amp unit back on or should I go with the 120/130? Will it matter, or make a
diffrence? (remember my SHO is an 89)
'89-93 3.0L 5-spd 90 amp unit
'94-95 3.0L 5-spd 130 amp unit
'93-95 3.2L auto 120 amp unit
thanks for any advice/input...
