The loud clunking noise in the rear is most likely failing upper strut mount
bushings, or it could be a blown strut rattling round back there.

For the age of our cars, that is a pretty normal stance for those cars that
still have the original struts and springs - all of the SHOs and SLOs I've
dealt with looked just like that until the springs and shocks were replaced.
Even with new rear suspension, the rear will always look like its sagging
when compared to the front fender clearance due to the design of the car,
but it will GREATLY improve.

If you want to go the cheap route, you can try just replacing the struts and
mounts (this worked on my cousin's SLO), although I'd say go to Napa and
spend the extra $160 or so on some replacement springs that will keep the
car at stock height. Or you could go all the way and buy Eibachs or Intrax
springs to give the car a more aggressive, lowered stance for around $250.

Either way you go, make sure you invest in some good-quality struts, like
Tokicos or Konis. Anyone know of some other good-quality struts that work
well on our SHOs?

Good luck!
