Personally, I use masking tape and a pen. Keeps things looking pretty..

If the welds have not been broken, you can easily remove the three nuts
per strut with no issues, as nothing moves.

If the welds ARE broken, mark the position of the plate before removing
the nuts (I use a permanent marker) so that you can get the plate back
in the same spot.

Okay I cannot access the archives so I must post this question.

    When installing strut tower braces can I just remove the three nuts
on the strut tower in order to get the mounting plate on with no adverse
affects? Do the wheels need to be off the ground or is it OK to have the
car's weight on them?
     Sorry if this sounds like stupid questions, but if I don't know I
can screw up lots of things. I'm really good at screwing up stuff. TIA
