If the part number matches the part indeed it is wrong. I was just passing
along info I received from an online Ford Parts Network vendor. I have
posted the pics on SHO forum and indeed the idler pulleys will work as
direct replacements as long as you get the Gen 3 retaining washers too. I
am sorry if the parts don't match, the number given me was for the
serpentine belt idler pulleys. I have no idea on the water pump tensioner
puller and have never asked for any info on it. I would look for the '99
pulleys which would work better. www.1stfordparts.com had both the '97 and
'99 idler pulleys listed at $54.00.

Subject: [Shotimes] Idler tensioner pulley bearing revisted, yet again
> I posted this over at SHOForum yesterday, haven't gotten any feedback
about the new part yet
>
> Need new bearings for both of the idler pulleys on my 89 (very badly, the
car has been on jackstands since Saturday). The 4-ribbed pulley was toast,
the 6-ribbed pulley is noisy.
>
> Following Paul N's (SHOZ123) advice, I had my local Ford store get a pair
of the Gen III idler pulley part number F6DZ-8678-A from the local
Motorcraft distributor in town this morning.
>
> Went to pick them up and decided to open the package. Now I'm confused.
>
> The part in the package is an idler assembly of some kind (he verified it
was for the 3.4L SHO) but is of such a construction that I wasn't sure if it
was the correct item to donate the bearing into my pulleys.
>
> It does have a bearing somewhere inside the assembly on the 4-ribbed
pulley, it also has a very stout spring. It looks like the center of the
spring has a bushing that can be pressed out, but I don't want to ruin an
overpriced part if I can help it.
>
> I made a return trip to the parts department and took a few photos and
posted them to a Photoisland album.
>
> I would appreciate it if someone who has done the bearing swap would look
at these pictures and tell me if I'm on the right track.
>
> Otherwise, I'm going to need new gen 1 pulleys (new or used) ASAP. If you
have one or both, drop me an e-mail.
