How many miles on the trans?

What year is the car?

The earlier the car, and the more the miles, the more likely the trans is
toast (sorry 'bout that). But having the fluid changed is a good place to
start. When they drop the lower pan of the tranny to drain the oil they will
have a chance to check for debris. One can easily be taken advantage of in
such a situation, however, so I would plan on being there to observe unless
I had the utmost confidence in the person doing the work.
