[Shotimes] exhaust questions

You want a resonator. A resonator is not unlike a muffler. However, the
closer you "muffle" the exhaust to the final y-joint (with a packed
muffler), the less pronounced the rasp will be compared to the exhaust note.
I personally tried several combinations of placing resonators right after
the flex joint, past the shift box and after the first 45 degree turn, next
to the gas tank. I settled on a 14"x3" resonator after the flex joint, and a
14"x4" resonator after the shift box. This is in conjunction with a single
chambered Flowmaster 50 series crossflow muffer. With two resonators I've
got low rpm throb, high-rpm scream and decelleration burble at a level
that's almost acceptable to the AWA. With one resonator everything was twice
as loud, and there was a good bit of "rasp" in that nasty 2500-3900 range.
With no resonators, the car was nuts loud, Mustang on steriods low-end, F1
in the pits top end, and a decelleration burble that had everyone looking
for the GTO with racing stripes. Resonators can really make or break an
exhaust note. Too bad most tuners/shops treat them as nothing more than
sound attenuators and don't include them during the engineering phase.

Oh, yeah, sorry! I forgot to answer the question! With an MTX, you are
limited. I believe that a 20"x4" resonator will fit behind the shift box,
but most shops won't want to attempt that install unless you have mandrel
bends leading to and coming off the resonator. Reason being that they will
have to weld cut the ends off the resonator and weld to the bends at a
slight angle. Non-mandrel bends are oval in shape and leave serious gaps.

You have the option of putting in more than one resonator. Before the shift
box you can fit a 14"x3" resonator if you cut the resonator side of the flex
pipe off, as well as the ends of the resonator. I was able to fit one in
with a non-mandrel bent piece of pipe between it and the resonator behind
the shift box.

Behind the first 45 degree bend, next to the gas tank, you can fit a 14"x3"
resonator. I did not check for fitment of 18" or 20" resonators. The
resonator will appear to hang down a bit, but it will still be above the
bottom of the subframe and the flex rails under the car.
