[Shotimes] Lost Ignition Key Replacement

Just bought a 89 SHO that does not have an ignition key. Locksmith wants 
a cost of  $100.00 to make a key
which is a third of the cost of the car. Ford dealers say they have no 
records of VIN versus key code older
than 96. Not that I am cheap, but only parsimonious in my hope to keep 
the costs down and my AWA happy.
Anyone have an idea of how to get a key at a lower cost?
