Paul,

The only thing I can think of that would be similar was the 
failure of the IAB valve on the v6 cars.  Expecially with a 
cone air filter mod, it would make some wild noise at idle 
and low engine speeds when it went bad.  Just a thought.

Also bearings can sometimes make a noise similar to that, 
wheel bearing or accessory belt bearing?
