It's very popular among people who read the SHO Forum to use the 10W-30,
at least in the warm months (or year round if you're in a warm enough
climate).
The reasons for the support of 10W-30 in non-freezing weather are as
follows: (1) It has a bit higher cold viscosity, so it has a better
chance of NOT all dripping down into the pan when the car sits, so
there's more oil immediately at the top end (cams, etc.) and (2) It
starts with a 10W base oil (instead of a 5W) so there are theoretically
less viscosity modifiers necessary to achieve the warm 30 weight
(20-point spread versus 30-point spread).
Also, I believe the 10W-30 oil is considered a viable option down to 0
degrees F.
I'm just regurgitating what I've heard/learned. I don't necessarily
agree or disagree with any of this. Even if I did, I wouldn't tell you
my opinion, because it's worthless ;^)

**NOTE that oil selection is highly personal preference!! Please let's
not start an oil war... again!
First off why 10w-30 to begin with? Especially in the winter months you
want that first number to be as low as possible. The first number
dictates how viscous the oil is when cold. For northern states you
definitely want to keep at or below 5w-30. Also, these engines were
made to run 5w-30 instead of 10w-30. Unless you have a personal reason
for running 10w-30 you may want to consider switching.
Second, starting first thing in the morning at 40o won't be a problem,
starting outside after you get to where you're going may cause some
concern. The car will start just fine... may chug for a bit and not
sound too good for a couple seconds but she'll start.
You might try turning the engine over for a couple seconds before
starting it. Just floor the gas peddle and crank away. Then key off
and start the car normally. That should at the very least get the oil
moving a bit to help lower the viscosity some.

Hello guys, it's obvious the deep freeze is here over the North East
region of the US. I was wondering if it ok to drive my SHO with 10w-30
Castrol oil in it in this kind of weather (-10:F(-24:C))?. The car is in
a heated garage and will be started at 40:F and warmed up before taking
it out. Thanks.
