Eric,

My cars did something that sounds like that till I switched 
to 5 or 0 weight synthetic oil.  What you could be hearing 
is the bypass opening in the oil filter trying to get oil 
through the thing.  I have even had oil "fart" past the 
filter seal in a gooey mass upon cold start when near zero 
degrees.

Also, I think the power steering can do the same thing with 
various valves.  Good idea to use synthetic in there too.

If you already use a low vis synthetic and synthetic ATF in 
the steering, then I am not sure what it would be.
