It's the same basic thing as someone else said....all the old folks were doing it,
and it doesn't cost anything....for me, the same spray can lasted 10 years, as long
as I cleaned out the nozzle.
Basically the paint expands when it is heated the first time, helping seal any small
gaps or indentations around the oil and water passages between the head and the
block. The metal ring around the cylinders would seal them, but the paint would
help insure the rest of the gasket did its job.
