My 90 did that off and on several different times during its life, then it cleared up and felt good up until the time that the clutch actually needed replacement.  I initially thought it was a cable/pulley problem.  Later I thought maybe it was the throwout bearing binding on the "snout" in the transmission.  I never discovered the real problem though.
You could have a friend operate the clutch while you watch the cable and linkage.  Maybe you could determine if something looks bad there.

I think if your pressure plate fingers were worn enough to cause a pop as the throwout bearing depresses them then you are very close to needing a clutch.  When I replaced my pressure plate, several of the fingers had their tips worn completely off.  You may have just one or a few with tips missing and they are snapping over the throwout bearing as it moves in and out.
