[Shotimes] struts and strut bearings

My 90 SHO is at 160k miles and has a LOT of strut groan on the front.  I replaced the struts about 10k miles ago with heavy duty Monroe.  The strut bearings looked fine and I noticed that there is a thin shim on top but I still have the groan.  I'm wondering if I need new bearings or do I just try thicker shims.

Also I'm wondering if anybody knows how much difference there is in damping rate between the stock struts and the heavy duty Monroe's.  I'm wondering if I should replace my struts with something like KYB's or Sach's.  These come in sets of 4 from shox.com even though I only want to replace the fronts.  I still have the stock rear struts and they seem fine.
