[Shotimes] Tires for convention/rest of the summer

They are a new silica-based tire design, which should keep them from
heat-cycling and getting hard as they age & wear down. Looks like they are
quite promising for all-season tires, and the price is pretty decent.
Getting all-season tires is always a compromise. These Contis, as well as
Pirellis, BFGs, and others are good, but do not work as well as a
summer-only type of tire compound. I used to run two sets of tires on my
'89, then I went back to all-seasons on one set of rims for the last couple
of SHOs, but I believe that I will return to two sets of rims for summer&
winter tires, as the summer-type of tread compounds just perform a bunch
better.....and have better wet traction than any all-season compound.

I recently put a set of Continental Conti Extreme Contact 225/55-16's on
my '89. I was replacing BFG Comp T/A's which, while they're an amazingly
grippy tire in the dry, totally suck in wet. The Conti's were $90, and I
gotta say are a great blend of performance and price. I have to try REAL
hard to make 'em squeal, and they stick very well in the wet.
They are a directional tire, which makes rotating 'em a real PITA, so I'm
just gonna move 'em front/back not side/side. (I don't like breaking
tires off the rims any more than is absolutely necessary)
For my money I think they are a good deal. I'm not real hard on my car,
but I like to put it through it's paces now and again when the opportunity
presents itself, and these tires work for me so far. I've only got about
600 miles on 'em yet, so time will tell how well they hold up, and they
are a new product (came out I think in April).
I'll update as I get more miles on.
Cheers, BB-NYC '89
