Okay, are there any Amish SHOtimers willing to drive over there in their
black-on-black SHOs to help Kent do a 60K? :-)
Kent, when I bought my 91 for $900, I had to outbid Al Fitz. Al Fitz has
been pretty nice to me so I figure he has repaid the favor of me keeping him
from being saddled with that car, in the shape I got it. (Hi, Al!) It had
128K and no service history. (Sound familiar, Kent?) Transmission sounded
like shit, and water was just pouring out of the weephole in the water pump.
I did a bunch of things on that car, first time I ever had: Rod bearings,
water pump, bunches of sensors, total exhaust, on and on. Some of those
jobs scared me; I didn't know if I really could do them right. I worried
inside whether I might be pouring a lot of effort and money into a really
bad idea. Mostly it was this list that got me through it. I still don't
think I could do similar work on any car that did not come with a pit crew
like SHOtimes. Not only did they answer questions, they helped me
understand, and that turned into a belief that I could actually do it. Now,
my 91 is a very reliable car, and I really enjoy it. But it took a while to
get there.
To tackle the 60K yourself, you will need some tools. Nothing really
exotic, and some stuff you can borrow or rent (such as pulley remover). I
would recommend you get on eBay and pick up a Helms official factory service
manual (full-length shop manual, far more complete than Haines or such).
Also dig into the 60K procedures on shotimes.com.
A big question is how you prioritize time vs. money. I hope this is not a
car that you had planned to use as a daily driver right away. If what you
need is a reliable daily driver in service soon, this SHO was not the right
pick. It could become what you need, but remember this old saying: "Do you
want it Reliable? Cheap? Soon? Pick any two."
We are ready to help you if you want to tackle this.
