Thanks to Justin, Don D, and R.F. for their advice and council. With some
help from my 15 year old son (getting time to look for another SHO), I
finally got the Camshaft Position Sensor replaced. EEC Self-test also
checks out clean after the R&R.
First of all, the replacement part from AZ is just fine. I compared it with
the one I removed and it is exactly the same as the one sold under the Wells
brand. I imagine there is only one manufacturer for this part. The cost is
about 2x less than getting it from a local Ford wholesaler. If you are
interested, the Ford part number that came off my 92 is E9DE-12A112-AA, and
the one printed on the Wells box is F134, The original part lasted me 11
years and a little over 200K miles.
One observation and question about the old part. After I removed it, I
examined it and see where the sensor pick-up is. Some metal shavings were
sitting on the head and I cleaned it off. Could that have contributed to
the erratic operation? And if I had cleaned it off and replaced, might it
have continued to work fine?
About the actual repair. Geesh, what a lousy time I had doing this. Sure
removing the crossover tube gives some more clearance, but not nearly
enough. The shop manual also suggests removing the engine torque strut, but
it didn't look that would help much at all so I didn't bother. At times I
felt I should have disconnected the power steering reservoir to get those 2
hoses out of the way. There isn't nearly enough room to work on getting at
the screws. If you want to make a mental note, I found that a 7/32 socket
for a 1/4 inch drive set works on the hex head of the screw. I did not
overtorque the screws as was suggested by everyone.
Part way into the repair I managed to drop and lose a small ratchet. Turned
out it was sitting on a ledge just below and behind the sensor. Lost over
an hour on that alone. But eventually the job was done. In the near future
I will post a few pics of the part and location of the sensor on the engine
for newb's like me that want to try and get frustrated.
Cheers,
