Yep, that's our Caravan route (I-88/I-39/I-90), although it wasn't done with
construction in mind, but rather to try & avoid tollbooths and heavy traffic
(like around O'Hare).

IIRC, the I-80/I-39/I-90 route added close to a 100 miles over the most
direct route.

The last time I was on I-90 between Chicago and Rockford, there was a lot of
construction.  I-90 is only 2 lanes between Elgin and Rockford, and they had
it down to one in several sections with maybe an extra of travel time for
me.

I suggest either I-80 to I-39, or I-294 to I-88 to I-39, the later is only
10+/- miles longer.  No construction on these routes.  I-39 joines I-90 at
Rockford, at which point the hotel is about an hour away.
