[Shotimes] Shifter Linkage Problem

Last night I dropped off my carpool buddy and as I go to shift the car out 
of 2nd to 1st I feel a little clunk as I shift forward.  However it did not 
shift in to 1st and the shifter is all loose and will not engage the 
different gears.  I remember reading some time ago about a plastic clip or 
something that can come off on the cable shifters.  Any one with any 
information on the parts, repair or diagnosis I would appreciate it.  I 
pulled the boot off the shiter last night, but I cannot make heads of tails 
of what might be the problem.
