> That would have been close to the final bottom line price, > but you need to see Eva negotiate prices.
When I bought my 90 SHO, a local small dealer had a newspaper ad for about $16k. They are 30 miles from my house so I went to the big dealer nearby and test drove a car. When we started negotiations I pulled out this newspaper ad. The salesman clearly was surprised by the price and said that they could not beat it, in fact that was probably not a valid price. The sticker price on the car I was looking at was about $23k and it did not have many options. The salesman showed me the sales figures for the past 2 months for this region, and his dealership had sold over 20 times the cars that the small dealer had. He told me that they would have surely sold more cars if they were pricing them like this. He told me that if I went to the dealer and inquired about this car I would be told that "somebody is test driving it" or some other story as to why it would not be available. Anyway, we negotiated for another hour and I managed to get them to beat the newspaper price. Having my 3 year old daughter running around the showroom and spilling ice cream on the floor probably helped me.
