I just one - not knowing the correct address I went from my house to Oakland
and the shortest route was 3062 miles!

Yep, 330 miles, to be exact (per MS Streets & Trips)!!
1,788 via the "Southern Route", versus taking I-35 up through OK City, then
over to Denver and meeting up with I-80 in Cheyenne (2,118 miles).
The only bitch about your route is the stretch through west Texas, and to a
lesser extent to Phoenix. When I brought the Fiero GT from CA to KY in '88,
I did the 1,100 miles from Phoenix to South Lake TX in one day. Thought West
Texas would never end!! Never thought I would appreciate looking at (the
relatively colorful!) wheat & corn driving though Iowa & Nebraska!!

You too, eh?
Don wondered about us coming up and joining with the caravans coming over on
I-80. I ran the numbers and that adds 300 miles to the trip. Which I bet
just killed that idea...

Glad you made it OK!
Just curious, how long was your trip (mileage)? How many miles did you do a
day?
I've been doing some preliminary driving times to Vallejo for next year.

I'm so proud of my car! Made it from San Jose to Middleton and back
with no problems. I was worried about the fuel pump after the Sunday night
dinner, but was told at the tech session that it's some valve near the fuel
pump that is malfunctioning and not to worry about it. It was making a
terrible growling noise associated with the regular fuel pump noise (vapors
bubbling back into the tank?). Haven't heard it since returning, though
(only heard it while there). It was nice to meet a bunch of people and ogle
their SHOs. I finally got to see that stuff called "rust" that everyone's
talking about;-).
I had a thought about next year's convention here in CA: Maybe some of
the people with limited time can get together with people who have more time
than money and have them drive their SHOs from there to here, and back,
instead of having them shipped.
Oh, I saw some happy cows off the side of I-80, right near Vallejo!
