John,
Are you getting pops, hissing, and buzzes from it, too? Does the tape
player work? Does the volume and/or power switch work? Unfortunately, it
sounds like your stereo has finally suffered from the malady that affects
these units. They were built with cheap electrolytic capacitors that have a
service life of approximately 10 years. At this point they start to leak
their electrolyte which corrodes/deteriorates the circuit traces and nearby
components. There are just way too many caps on the circuit board to
replace and besides, once they've started to leak the damage is done. If
you find a stock replacement stereo, its caps will be of the same vintage
and it will likely fail in the near future. Time for an aftermarket system.
Mine died last year; you should feel lucky yours lasted 12 or 13 years.
