If they had an ounce of intelligence and stopped to think about it,
they may realize that there isn't any relation. However, for most
people its a subconcious thing. I know people like my father would love
to harp on how Chevy won this or did this etc because he was and is
still foolishly driving Camaros and Corvettes (or was buying a new one
every few years the last time I talked to him). He fits the stereotype
of the car enthusiast who is more about his image and knows very little
about what he drives. These people fall to the marketing hype of "what
we learn on the racetrack is what goes into the car you drive". Many
car enthusiasts know the difference but I'd be willing to say that most
of the general public doesn't have a clue about these things...When
people see their brand or the brand that they want winning on the
track, they are going to lean more towards that brand when they walk
into a car showroom.
