When I was following NHRA modified production classes about 30 years ago,
some of those guys were turning 9000 with their small block chevy's. Most
were doing close to 8000, and this was with an engine that was somewhat
available to just about anybody to put in their street car.

I remember the cars of 2 customers of my dad's:

One guy was a plumber with about a 1968 Chevy pickup. He special-ordered a
1966 Impala SS with the 425hp 427 and 4-speed. His wife didn't like driving
it so my dad swapped engines between the 1966 Impala and the pickup (283),
and put a powerglide in the Impala. The plumber just chugged around town in
that 427 with high compression and mechanical lifters.

The other guy was a welder who occasionally worked on sprint cars. He had
an Impala with a 327 in it, probably a 1965. For some reason he had put a
full roller cam setup in the Impala even though he just lugged around town
also, so he had a valvetrain that could to 8000 even though his induction
system wouldn't support it.
