FW: [Shotimes] OT - IRL Gen 4 Chevy, NOT!

Toyota's Tomas Sheckter even called it a Ford Cosworth, I think, in a post
race interview. I bet Chevy hated that. At least Chip Ganassi restrained
his comments to something like, "I wish we could have a one-off motor like
that someday."

Well, I just realized what I started about 30 minutes ago, right after I
started downloading 167 emails. Good discussion guys! I had no idea what I
was starting.... as for me...

- I love any and all motorsports, but dirt is for racing (anybody going to
the World 100 or Knoxville Nationals?), pavement is for getting there,
though I was at Blackhawk, and I've been a Bill Elliott fan since about 1982
(I'm a diehard, underdog lover, who prefers to go against the
establishment... I'm also a Detroit Lions & Ford fan)

- Ovals are best for watching, but driving a road course is a ton of fun,
and to get the most out of your car on either takes the same skills, as very
few ovals are "foot to the floor all the time" tracks

- The last 2 (at least) CART races were blowouts, which is very surprising I
think with their all Cosworth engine rule

- A good nitro powered drag car will shake your world like nothing except
maybe an F15 (SR71, Mark?)

- I'll give all the skill in the world to the unlimited hydroplane pilots -
200mph in a 4ft. wave and turn 180 degrees while outside another missile on
water doing the same thing - wow

- Part of the close competition and safety of the IRL is the "no blocking!"
rule, which I bet would work for NASCAR, along with a "under yellow, the
lineup will return to the last completed lap" rule, like a million little
guy tracks in the USA

- I'm a lifelong Ford fan, but I've about given up on all the "American"
automakers - and I agree that the brand/USA loyalty feelings have very
little facts to stand on anymore, though I cringe at the NASCAR Toyota
Craftsman Truck being tested as we speak...

- Can we petition Ford for a Cosworth Taurus since they already have a
Cosworth Focus?

Good night, John Boy...

I love this part "Hornish tested the Gen IV (or Gen Ford as it's being
called)"

OK, one last time. This motor was NOT built by Cosworth for Chevy. It
was built by Cosworth for FORD. That is why this is so idiotic. I've
included a link below, and some quotes from the story. The racing press
has been talking about this for weeks. You should be able to find other
information on this in about five minutes of searching:

Here's some from the link:

"Starting with the next Indy Racing League show July 27 at Michigan,
Ford-owned Cosworth Engineering will be powering two-time IRL champion
Sam Hornish Jr. Oh sure, the engine will be called the Gen IV Chevy Indy
V-8 and all the people associated with the program will be wearing
Chevrolet shirts. But the truth is that Chevy's current IRL engine is a
dog with no bite. Until Saturday night's race, Hornish nor any other
Chevy driver had led a lap of competition this season and GM had no
immediate answers. The only quick fix was to swallow its pride and ask
for help from its arch rival"

"Ford, which supplies all the turbocharged engines for the CART Champ
Car series, had comissioned Cosworth to build a normally-aspirated IRL
engine when it appeared CART would change rules to the IRL specs. But it
didn't happen so Cosworth had an IRL-approved engine just sitting around
and Chevrolet had a problem.

And here's a quote from Joe Negri who agrees with how some of you feel,
(but of course, he HAS to look at it this way):

"I don't look at this as a Ford project just beause they happen to own
Cosworth," said Joe Negri, IRL program manager for GM. "It's no
different than Honda and Ilmor teamming up. Ford isn't competing here
and this is good business for Cosworth

Dave

Do you have any literature regarding this premade motor being sold out?
I don't believe Cosworth has the right to sell out a motor built for
Ford. What I've gathered in this tread is that the motor was indeed
built solely by Cosworth for Chevy, never as a Ford product. I also
don't recall anyone stating that the motor was bought outright from
Ford. Either way, it's still bought out and that's all that matters.
It's like buying a race motor from someone who has a extra motor for
extra insurance. That isn't scamming or cheating in my rule book. If you
buy it, it's yours as are the rights to sell it, name it, claim it, or
even junk it! And I'm sure Chevy paid a pretty penny for the motors they
have now, so I don't see anything wrong with claiming it their own.
