Gas-charged shocks don't add any lift either.  I remember long ago the first 
time I took one out of the box it had a small wire holding it compressed.  I 
cut that wire expecting some rapid movement but it barely did anything.

Now air shocks are a different story.  I don't know if they are available 
for our application.
