Yes, it is widespread. You are one of the lucky ones. This Optima problem
has been mentioned on the 911 list for a few years now.
Paul Nimz has info on better/cheaper sealed batteries.

Hhuhuhuh ??? I have always thought that optima was the best battery bar
none. I have had my optima for 6 years now and its still running strong
since the first day in the car. Is this on the new optima's? I hope this is
not wide spread.
