When I busted a strap, the main issue is that I couldn't shift at anything
over 3,500 or so. Had to drive the car for a couple of months until the
parts came in. Ran (and idled) OK otherwise.

I too have been a victim of a busted strap very recently. I don't
remember that the idle was all that rough, but getting the tranny in gear
while the engine was running WAS a major issue. The better way I like to
describe the feeling was as Mark N. says, an out of balance sensation. It
doesn't feel quite right and is noticeable. When you see the clutch, it's
easy to understand why that would be. The pressure plate isn't fully
releasing and the weight imbalance becomes very noticeable. I don't
remember if Neno said his clutch was a stocker, but if it is , the strap is
actually three riveted metal blades. When mine failed, they just completely
self destructed in the bell housing and there was nothing left. Yes, there
was some scoring inside the bell housing, but it wasn't that bad. In my
case, the tranny didn't get damaged at all. But until I got the clutch
replaced, I didn't know what to expect. : o
