I tend to agree... something doesn't smell right here. I have heard of only
one crank pulley going bad and that was because of another pulley (A/C
compressor maybe?) seizing. The end result was that the A/C belt had enough
tension in it to hold the outer portion of the crank pulley in place while
the crank spun the inner portion shearing the rubber in between.
I would definitely get the old parts from these guys and find out what
exactly they are saying is bad on the crank pulley. There's not much that
can be wrong with it. One being what I've mentioned, another being that
it's gouged, cracked, or otherwise broken (most likely from improper removal
or re-install), and finally the keyway for the woodruff key could be
damaged. The first two would have resulted in a non-drivable SHO or a SHO
with a really nasty vibration. The last one is the only feasible damage I
can see happening to the pulley.
