Modifying Oil Pumps....was: Re: [Shotimes] Ok to leave 3.2L oil pump on my 3.2L for my '89?

The gears are thicker with the same number of teeth. The backing plates are
the same. The housings are machined differently. It is possible that the 3.0
housing could be machined deeper the accept the the 3.2 thicker gears, but
the machining would have to be very precise to control the clearances.

BTW, the oil pump housings and backing plate are relatively soft aluminum
die castings. The gears are hardened sintered metal. With 180K miles on a
3.0 pump there was visible wear on the housing and backing plate. Didn't
detect any wear on the gears, but there was most likely some that would thin
the involute somewhat. This was enough to cause an otherwise tight 65k miles
3.2 engine to flicker the oil pressure light with a gauge reading of 5-6
psi. Therefore, in my opinion changing the crank bearings only partly solves
the low oil pressure problems with the v6 SHO. Another area for loosing oil
pressure is wear of the cam bearings which are machined into the aluminum
heads.
