Your '93 likely has R-12, which you have to go through some red tape to buy
and is expensive. Although some have had good luck with an R-134a
conversion, I would not try it if you plan on keeping your SHO another year
or two. A drop-in R-12 replacement is AutoFrost R-406a). But you also have
to go through some red tape to buy it.
First see if you can find your leak. Maybe only possible if there is some
R-12 still in the system. If the leak is in the evap. coil, this is behind
the dash and is a bear to get to. If it's just a rusty line, like my
'93MTX, then it is doeable.
About 4 years ago the '93 had a leaky seal. A local wrench turner popped it
off, replaced it and recharged the system with R-406a. Worked fine until the
middle of last Summer when the line finally gave. I think that an R-134a
converstion requires lots of parts to do it right.
Tools are not that bad. Line/Gauge set is under $100. Think that Harbor
Freight has an air powered vaccume pump cheaper than the $36 that I paid to
www.ackits.com
Maybe they have a cheap set of gauges also?
