I will chime in here.

The only "benefit" I see from letting young children be 
exposed to the darker side of life, is not a "tougher" kid, 
not a more worldly kid, just a meaner and less happy kid.

I grew up in a tiny town where drugs were something you took 
to get well.  Race relations were what drivers had when they 
had a fight after a wreck on the dirt track.

Later when I was more mature, I went to a large college, and 
got all the education I needed to get up to speed with a 
bigger and meaner world, but I never missed anything 
important or valuable growing up happy and without the 
intrusion of too much of the wider world.
