Yes the non-numerical gauge is rather vague and is why Ford used it.
Imagine if they actually put numbers on it. They would have had to have
used an accurate gauge. The best way is to measure the temp of the
water/coolant is as it exits the t-stat when completely warmed up and
cycling. This can be done at flush time or with a surface IR pyrometer. I
guess we are lucky to have the letters to go by. Could have a gauge that
only has a C, H and a couple of lines. :)
FWIW if a 10 ohm load is applied to the gauge it should read on the H, if a
74 ohm load is applied to the gauge it should read on the C.
In your case John I would guess the O R range is what the t-stat is rated at
and indeed it is the internal resistance of the gauge doing this. Mine runs
on the M and is in the 190F range +-5F with a192F t-stat as measured at the
hottest surface point near the t-stat.
