Mark,

You probably would be amazed at how easy it is to remove 
the top of the center console - (assuming you have a 
93-95):

One screw under the cup holder.
Unscrew the shift knob.
Pull the top half up, there are about 8 metal clips which 
hold the console to the bottom half.

That will get you all the access you would need to "the 
nether regions"...
