Chris,

The Helms also specifies the use of these plugs.  Their purpose is to keep
the differential side gears from shifting when both axle shafts are pulled
out.  This is far more important that the ATF, which can easily be replaced.
If the side gears shift, you will have to disassemble the differential to
correct.

I made my own plugs from an old kid's plastic wiffle ball bat handle.
Hacksawed off to the proper length.
